From BYOAI to Business Value

A survey published on 8 May 2024 reports that 75 per cent of the global knowledge workers it sampled use artificial intelligence at work, and that use of generative tools has nearly doubled in six months. The same study reports that 78 per cent of those users bring their own tools, rising to 80 per cent at small and medium-sized companies. The sponsor sells products in this market, and the sampled population is knowledge workers only. Both facts belong beside the numbers. Read carefully, the finding is not that employees are behaving badly. It is that demand has outrun supply for about 18 months, and that people under delivery pressure have solved their own problem in the way people always do. The organisation's position is that it now has the risk without the visibility and without the benefit. This paper sets out how to convert that into something governed. It proposes a discovery method that does not rely on self-report alone, a channelling strategy that provides an approved route faster than it closes the unapproved one, a workflow redesign method, a value tree and an adoption dashboard that distinguishes logins from meaningful use.
